What owners say about this generation

Our take, from owner reports

Owners of the 8R generation describe it as a genuinely enjoyable vehicle to drive with a premium feel, but nearly all of them stress that it is expensive to own and maintain, especially as mileage climbs.

The version owners recommend

The 3.2 V6 is the most consistently praised engine for this generation, described as solid and reliable with carbon buildup as its main known issue. The 3.0T is also called rock solid and paired with a well-regarded ZF8 transmission. Among 2.0T owners, later model years (2013+) are preferred over early ones due to the revised engine. There is no single unanimous best trim, but the V6 and 3.0T engines carry the strongest positive consensus.

Competitors to consider

Owners compare it most often with the Acura RDX, Lexus RX350, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and BMW 328i Wagon.

Overall sentiment

Owners of the 8R generation describe it as a genuinely enjoyable vehicle to drive with a premium feel, but nearly all of them stress that it is expensive to own and maintain, especially as mileage climbs. The 3.2 V6 and 3.0T engines earn consistent praise as solid, long-lasting powerplants, while the 2.0T is repeatedly flagged for oil consumption and timing chain concerns. Early 2.0T model years (roughly 2008-2012) draw the harshest criticism, while later 2.0T and the V6/3.0T options are viewed more favorably. The dominant theme is that this is a car for someone with a maintenance budget, not a cheap runaround.

Positioning vs competitors

Owners consistently position the 8R Q5 as more fun to drive and better appointed than the Japanese and domestic alternatives, but less reliable and far more expensive to maintain. The Acura RDX and Lexus RX350 are repeatedly recommended as the smarter buy for someone prioritizing low running costs. The Mazda CX-5 is cited as the inexpensive-to-maintain choice. Several owners note that the German driving experience is hard to beat even when features are comparable, but that the premium price and repair bills are the trade-off. The 3.2 V6 is specifically called out as a safer bet than the 2.0T for this era.

Recommended configurations

Owners recommend the 3.2 V6 or 3.0T over the 2.0T for reliability, and advise avoiding early 2.0T model years (2008-2012) due to oil consumption. For any 2.0T, owners stress verifying timing chain condition and checking for oil consumption before purchase. A pre-purchase inspection is strongly and repeatedly advised. The 3.0T is recommended with the caveat of eventual carbon cleaning and timing chain awareness at high mileage.

General recommendations

This generation suits buyers who want a fun, premium-driving SUV and can budget for ongoing maintenance and repairs; it is repeatedly discouraged for young or budget-constrained buyers. Owners advise preferring the 3.2 V6 or 3.0T, being cautious with the 2.0T (especially 2008-2012), and always getting a pre-purchase inspection and full service history. Several owners suggest that around 150k miles marks the practical end of the reliability window, and that a well-maintained example with records is far safer than a cheap high-mileage one.

Remarks

Owners repeatedly emphasize that maintenance history matters more than mileage on this generation, and that neglected examples become money pits quickly. The 3.2 V6 is noted as not sharing the 2.0T's oil consumption problem. Several owners mention that the 2.0T oil consumption issue was the subject of a class action with coverage limited to roughly 80k miles, leaving higher-mileage owners to absorb the cost. The 3.0 TDI is mentioned as reliable with expensive DPF replacements. Analysis based on approximately 126 substantive owner discussions about this generation.
