The version owners recommend

Insufficient owner data available to declare a consensus. The partial signal favors later first-generation cars, with owners stating that 2007 and later (and some 2006) models are better, and one owner explicitly saying later gen-1 models need fewer engine-out repairs than earlier ones. One owner also stated they deliberately stayed away from the "C" model.

Competitors to consider

Owners compare it most often with the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster.

Overall sentiment

Owner sentiment for this generation is sharply divided and dominated by cost-of-ownership warnings rather than driving impressions. Critics describe it as a money pit with catastrophic repair bills, while a smaller group of long-term owners insist the cars are solid and reliable if maintained, with one reporting 155k miles and another three years of trouble-free ownership. Praise centers on the W12 powertrain, comfort, distinctive looks, and the joy of the car; criticism centers on labor-intensive repairs, air suspension, vacuum lines, and depreciation. Several owners specifically note that later first-generation cars (roughly 2006-2007) are better than the earliest examples, with fewer repairs requiring engine removal.

Positioning vs competitors

Owners position this generation as a "personal luxury" car in the mold of 1960s and 1970s American luxury coupes, valued for straight-line power, comfort, sound system, and presence rather than cornering. Against the E55 AMG and other AMG models, owners argue the Mercedes offers comparable fun with far less maintenance. Against the Lexus LS430, it is framed as the closest alternative ride but with dramatically higher running costs. Against Porsches, Jaguars, and Aston Martins, owners describe the Bentley as more distinctive but less reliable and more expensive to keep, with several recommending those alternatives outright. A recurring theme is that the car's depreciation makes it attainable to buy but not to run, and that it competes poorly on cost of ownership with nearly everything cross-shopped.

Recommended configurations

Insufficient owner data available. The only configuration-related guidance is a preference for later first-generation model years over the earliest ones, and one owner's stated avoidance of the "C" model. No consensus on coupe versus convertible emerged; one owner chose the coupe specifically to avoid soft-top replacement costs, while others own and enjoy the GTC.

General recommendations

Owners advise that this generation should only be bought by those who can absorb large, unpredictable repair bills, with one owner citing roughly 7-8k per year on average and others citing 3-8k per year. Buy only with full service records, garage-kept history, and low mileage; without records, expensive deferred maintenance becomes the buyer's problem. Get a pre-purchase inspection at a Bentley dealer, but have the actual work done at an independent shop specializing in high-end cars, since dealer labor rates and pricing are far higher. Budget for air struts, vacuum lines, rear high-mount brake light, and O2 sensors. Prefer later first-generation cars over the earliest examples. Owners repeatedly warn that cars that have sat unused can have more problems than driven ones.

Remarks

A notable split exists between owners who report severe, repeated failures at low mileage and those who report years of trouble-free ownership with only routine maintenance, which makes budgeting advice unusually wide-ranging. Several owners note that many parts are shared VW, Bosch, or Continental components and can be sourced more cheaply than Bentley-branded equivalents, and that used modules, switches, and buttons are inexpensive from breakers. One owner reported a 35,000 dollar convertible top and motor repair just past warranty. Another reported buying a 2007 GTC with 52k miles, spending on sensors, roof, and prior maintenance, then selling at a 12k loss. One owner reported 155k miles on a 2008 coupe. One owner reported 200k km with air suspension, radiator, brake light, headliner, and steering issues but described none as really expensive. One owner reported a 2005 with window motor and parking sensor repairs at 3,000 each. One owner reported a 2007 GT with 47k miles and no issues over three years beyond oil changes. One owner reported a 2007 GTC with no major issues beyond standard maintenance and a 200 dollar convertible top fix. Analysis based on approximately 66 substantive owner discussions about this generation.
