The version owners recommend

The 440i with the B58 engine is the most consistently recommended version. Owners describe it as an amazing daily driver with teleporter-like acceleration and note the B58 is both reliable and efficient. The 430d diesel is also praised by one long-term owner who reports three years of ownership surpassing expectations. No specific model year is singled out as definitively best, though owners generally advise against very early B58 examples due to injector issues that were addressed by 2018.

Competitors to consider

Owners compare it most often with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A5, BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series.

Overall sentiment

Owners of the 2014-2021 F36 4 Series generally express strong satisfaction, frequently describing the car as a driver's vehicle that is practical, especially in Gran Coupe form. The B58 inline-six engine in the 440i is widely praised for its performance and tuning potential, while the Gran Coupe's hatchback trunk is highlighted as a standout practical feature. Common criticisms focus on the degrading soft-touch plastic on door handles, the harsh ride of run-flat tires, and the general cost of maintenance associated with an out-of-warranty German vehicle. Owners also note that the car's design still looks modern and draws compliments, though some acknowledge that the subsequent generation's styling is polarizing.

Positioning vs competitors

Owners position the F36 4 Series as a sportier alternative to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which is described as having superior ride comfort and interior luxury but less engaging driving dynamics. Compared to the BMW 3 Series, the 4 Series is seen as more attractive and lower to the ground, though less practical due to fewer doors. The 8 Series Gran Coupe is viewed as a more luxurious and beautiful option, but owners note the 4 Series offers better tuning potential and a more practical hatchback design. Against the Ford Mustang, the BMW is considered more expensive to maintain but offers superior curb appeal and luxury. The Audi A5 and VW Arteon are mentioned as equivalent alternatives without detailed comparison.

Recommended configurations

Owners recommend the 440i Gran Coupe for its combination of the praised B58 engine and the highly practical hatchback trunk. The 430i is described as not notoriously unreliable, making it an acceptable choice for those prioritizing fuel economy. For diesel buyers, the 430d is reported as a satisfying driver's car, while the 420d is considered respectable but less powerful. Owners advise avoiding run-flat tires due to harsh ride quality and premature wear. For those considering a 2019 model, the B58 in that year is noted as having the earlier injector issues resolved.

General recommendations

The F36 4 Series is best suited for buyers who prioritize driving engagement and style over outright practicality, though the Gran Coupe body style significantly improves usability. Owners recommend purchasing from BMW with CPO warranty coverage, as out-of-warranty repairs can be expensive. For the 2019 model year specifically, owners advise more frequent oil changes than the factory 10,000-mile interval to prevent oil filter disintegration. When buying used, owners suggest checking for the common door handle material degradation, verifying brake rotor condition (surface rust from sitting is common), and being cautious of multi-owner cars with low mileage. The 2015-2017 models are generally considered reliable when maintained, with the N57 diesel noted as potentially the most reliable engine option.

Remarks

The F36 generation's styling is frequently praised, with owners noting people still ask if their 2019 model is a 2022. The Gran Coupe's trunk is repeatedly highlighted as a killer feature, with one owner claiming it can hold as much as an X1 with seats down. Owners of the subsequent G22 generation express strong disappointment with the new design, particularly the large grille, with several stating they chose to keep or buy the F36 instead. The 440i Gran Coupe is described as being able to fit a skinny twin mattress with the seats folded. Analysis based on approximately 271 substantive owner discussions about this generation.
