Our take, from owner reports
Owner sentiment for this generation is mixed and heavily dependent on individual experience.
21 problems reported (2 very frequent, 5 recurrent, 14 isolated) · medium confidence
Often traced to a weak, dead, or loose battery or its terminal clamp.
With a recall for ECU reprogramming that dealers may decline to perform unless severe.
Requiring replacement of the whole rear panel at roughly $1000 for the part.
Insufficient owner data available to declare a consensus. Partial signal: owners speak positively of the 2.4L "Tiger Shark" engine found in pre-2019 models, describing it as long-lasting and shared across many Stellantis vehicles of that era. Some owners note that post-2019 models have a turbo engine that is more fun in Sport mode but of unproven longevity. The 1.3 diesel is discussed by one owner who owns it. No trim emerges as a clear owner favorite.
Owners compare it most often with the Jeep Renegade, Nissan Juke, Nissan Kicks, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Owner sentiment for this generation is mixed and heavily dependent on individual experience. A vocal group reports genuine satisfaction, citing reliability with regular maintenance, fun driving dynamics in Sport mode, good road-trip manners, and a sturdy feel for its size. An equally vocal group reports frustration, pointing to hard or jerky shifting, electrical gremlins, oil consumption, and steep depreciation. Early model years (2016-2018) dominate the discussions and draw the most complaints, while later owners (2020-2022) report similar electrical and start-stop quirks but fewer transmission complaints. A recurring theme is that the car is essentially a rebadged Jeep Renegade, which owners use both as a defense of its mechanicals and as a warning about shared weaknesses.
Owners repeatedly describe this generation as mechanically identical to the Jeep Renegade, sharing its drivetrain, and several say telling mechanics it is a Renegade is the only way to get service. Against the Nissan Juke, owners see the 500X as less weird-looking but less of a performance option. Against the Kicks, owners treat both as compromised, with the 500X seen as the "least bad" Fiat but not a reliability pick. Against mainstream small cars like the Civic and Corolla, owners position the 500X as more stylish and elevated but far less reliable and with worse resale. Against the RAV4 and CX-3, owners generally concede those are the safer buys. Several owners note the 500X is not as fuel efficient as the smaller 500 and is not a true SUV in size despite feeling like one.
Insufficient owner data available. Owners mention the Lounge and Trekking Plus trims in passing, and one owner advises buying used rather than new due to depreciation. One owner suggests a manual transmission over the automatic, citing the automatic's poor reputation, but this is a single opinion. No configuration reaches consensus.
Owners who are satisfied emphasize that high mileage is achievable with diligent fluid changes and maintenance, and that the drivetrain can exceed 150k miles if not abused. Owners considering purchase are repeatedly advised to negotiate hard on price, as several report quoted prices above market value, and to get an extended warranty, especially on former rental cars. Buyers are warned to check for the oil burning recall and to have the ECU reprogramming done if applicable. Owners advise inspecting the battery and its terminal connections first when electrical warnings appear, as many issues trace back to a weak or loose battery. Owners also warn that not all mechanics will work on Fiats, and that parts and repairs can be pricey. Several owners recommend avoiding the model entirely in favor of a Civic, Corolla, RAV4, or CR-V, while others say it is no better or worse than most cars if maintained. Prefer later model years if transmission smoothness matters, and budget for potential electrical and door-handle repairs regardless of year.
Owners frequently note that the 500X shares its platform and drivetrain with the Jeep Renegade, which they use both to reassure mechanics and to explain shared faults. Depreciation is a major theme, with one owner reporting a purchase at 23k dropping to 7k in value within a few years. Several owners report that dealership service experiences were poor, including misdiagnosis, unnecessary part replacement, and long waits for parts. A number of owners describe the car as fun to drive in Sport mode and good for city parking and road trips, while others describe the interior as low-end and the ride as poor. Rear seat space is repeatedly called tight, especially with car seats, dogs, or grandchildren. One owner warns of a specific listing with a forged title, and another describes an electrical nightmare experience.
