The Chevrolet Equinox splits into two very different reliability stories by generation.

The 2010 to 2017 Equinox with the 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder: avoid. Owner data and documented failure reports show this engine has a premature timing chain failure problem that can occur anywhere from 100,000 to 160,000 km. A timing chain replacement on this engine costs $2,000 to $3,500. The engine also burns oil excessively in many examples, masking low oil levels and accelerating wear. The 3.0L V6 in this generation is more durable but fuel economy is poor.

The 2018+ Equinox with the 1.5T turbocharged engine: fewer catastrophic failures reported, but this generation is newer and high-mileage examples are only now entering the used market. Owner data for long-term durability beyond 150,000 km is thinner than for the CR-V or RAV4.

At $16,000 to $20,000 CAD, you have access to reliable, proven alternatives. A 2019 to 2021 Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 in this budget with 80,000 to 120,000 km is a materially safer purchase than an Equinox of any generation. The CR-V's owner data shows exceptional long-term reliability and the RAV4 is the benchmark for the segment.

The Equinox is not without its buyers. The interior is comfortable and the price reflects its lower reliability reputation. But for someone who states reliability as the main concern, it is the wrong choice in this category.
