However, reliability is a major concern: the N20 four-cylinder engine in the 528i is widely condemned as unreliable, and the N63 V8 in the 550i is described as notoriously problematic with oil consumption and engine failure risks. The N55 inline-six in the 535i is consistently cited as the most reliable and recommended engine for this generation. The affected vehicles may have received a replacement Sensor Cluster Unit (SCU) during a service visit. These SCUs have an acceleration sensor that may have been incorrectly programmed and, as a result, the SCU may not accurately determine if activation and deployment of the air bags, safety belt pre-tensioners and head restraints is necessary in the event of a crash.
