What owners say about this generation

Our take, from owner reports

The version owners recommend

Insufficient owner data available to declare a consensus. Partial signal: the 3.6 V6 is the most discussed engine and is praised as a pleasure to drive when maintained, but it is also the engine most tied to oil consumption and timing chain warnings. The CTS-V (with the LS6 in 2004-2005 and LS2 in 2006-2007) draws the strongest positive owner testimony, including one owner at 170k miles with no issues and another reporting only a water pump and alternator since 2010. One owner called their 2004 3.6 bought new "possibly the best all-around car I've owned."

Competitors to consider

Owners compare it most often with the Lexus (ES350 and general Lexus sedans), Mazda 3, Mazda CX-5, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz E350 (W212).

Overall sentiment

Owners of the 2003-2007 CTS generally describe it as a good-looking, enjoyable daily driver that can rack up serious mileage with disciplined maintenance, with several owners reporting 200k+ miles and one reporting 317k. Praise centers on styling, ride quality, and the sense that it was a solid all-around car, while criticism centers on oil consumption, timing chain risk on the 3.6, cooling-system and radiator failures, ignition coils, and general "something breaks every month" maintenance costs on neglected examples. Sentiment is split by example condition rather than by model year: well-maintained cars are loved, while cheap high-mileage cars are described as money pits. The CTS-V variant draws strong enthusiasm for its sleeper character and durable drivetrain, though owners warn about rear differential and wheel-hop issues.

Positioning vs competitors

Owners position the CTS as cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain than a Lexus or Mercedes, but less refined and less trouble-free; one owner argued a Lexus would be "double in maintenance," while others recommended Lexus or Mazda as the smarter buy for someone who wants low running costs. Against the Mazda 3 and CX-5, the CTS is framed as the more characterful but less reliable and less economical choice, with several owners actively trading or advising a trade out of the CTS into Mazda. Against the Mercedes E350, owners treat the CTS as the cheaper, easier-to-wrench option but concede the Mercedes rides better. Against BMW M3 and AMG, the CTS-V is positioned as a "gentleman's muscle car": subtler and cheaper than its German rivals, with a bulletproof engine but a fragile rear end.

Recommended configurations

Owners advise buying a 3.6 only with a documented maintenance history and frequent oil checks, and several recommend replacing the timing chain on a high-feature 3.6 at or before 90,000 miles as preventative maintenance. For the CTS-V, owners specifically praise the 2006-2007 LS2 cars and the 2004-2005 LS6 cars, and recommend adding a differential bushing set, an anti-wheel-hop kit, poly bushings, and a short shifter. Owners also recommend verifying that a car advertised as a V is genuine, since first-gen V cars were manual with a 6-lug wheel pattern. For cosmetic work, owners favor keeping it simple: clear fog lights, exhaust tips, tint, and headlight restoration: rather than piling on cheap mods.

General recommendations

This generation suits a buyer who wants an inexpensive, good-looking rear-drive sedan and is willing to do or pay for regular maintenance, check the oil constantly, and address cooling-system and ignition parts proactively. It is a poor choice for someone who wants a trouble-free appliance or who cannot absorb surprise repair bills. Owners repeatedly warn against cheap, suspiciously low-priced examples and advise a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted independent mechanic, a scan tool check for codes, and a look at the radiator, transmission cooler lines, rear hub/ABS sensors, axle seals, and rust around the pinch welds and frame. Low-mileage garage-kept cars are viewed favorably but not as a bargain at inflated prices, and owners note that a 20-year-old car needs tires, brakes, and every fluid replaced regardless of mileage. The CTS-V is not recommended for winter or snow use.

Remarks

Owners place heavy emphasis on oil discipline as the single biggest factor in whether a 3.6 lasts, and several mention that dealerships consider one quart per 1,000 miles acceptable consumption. The CTS-V community treats the rear end as the car's known weak point and recommends reinforcing it before adding power. Cosmetic headlight restoration is a common and well-liked fix, with owners reporting professional sand-and-clearcoat jobs costing around $200.
