Our take, from owner reports
Owners generally describe the second-generation CTS as a good, enjoyable car that rewards proper maintenance but punishes neglect.
23 problems reported (2 very frequent, 4 recurrent, 17 isolated) · high confidence
The CTS-V (specifically the 2011-2013 models with the LSA supercharged V8) receives the strongest reliability endorsements. Multiple owners report zero major issues across daily driving and high mileage, with one owner at 85,000 miles reporting only routine maintenance. The 2012 and newer 3.6L LFX engine is described as having resolved the worst of the earlier timing chain concerns. No single non-V trim emerges as a clear consensus winner, though the 3.6L is more commonly discussed than the 3.0L.
Owners compare it most often with the BMW 3-series and 5-series, Mercedes-Benz C-class and E-class, Infiniti G37, Lexus IS and Audi A4.

Owners generally describe the second-generation CTS as a good, enjoyable car that rewards proper maintenance but punishes neglect. The 3.6L V6 is the focal point of most discussion: owners consistently warn that it burns oil and can destroy its timing chain if oil levels are not vigilantly monitored, though several note the issue was improved in later model years. The CTS-V variants receive notably stronger praise for reliability and build quality, with multiple owners reporting trouble-free high-mileage ownership. Overall sentiment is cautiously positive: owners love the driving experience, styling, and value, but emphasize that these cars require attentive upkeep and can generate expensive repair bills if maintenance is deferred.
Owners position the CTS as less expensive to maintain than comparable German luxury sedans, with one owner stating maintenance costs are "less than anything German, but more than a Japanese lux car." Another owner who cross-shopped against BMW and Mercedes said the Cadillac was chosen partly because German equivalents "definitely cost more to maintain." The prior-generation STS is frequently cited as having superior seats and suspension refinement, with owners noting the CTS is good but not great in comparison. Against the newer CT5, some owners suggest the CTS offers more features at lower trim levels. One owner compared the CTS-V favorably to a Corvette Z06 in terms of smiles per gallon, though noted worse fuel economy.
Owners recommend the 3.6L V6 over the 3.0L for those wanting more power, though the 3.0L is acknowledged as a viable economy choice. For the 3.6L, owners strongly advise prioritizing 2012 and newer models with the LFX engine, which they describe as having largely resolved the timing chain issues that plagued earlier iterations. The CTS-V with the manual transmission receives a specific endorsement from one owner. For the V-Sport (2014), owners report generally good reliability but note the car is less desirable on the resale market. RWD is recommended over AWD by one owner to reduce complexity and potential failure points.
Owners consistently advise that the 3.6L engine must never run low on oil: checking the dipstick every other fuel fill-up is recommended, along with oil changes every 5,000-6,000 miles using high-quality synthetic. Pre-purchase inspections are strongly recommended, with owners suggesting buyers ask a mechanic familiar with the model to check for known issues including timing chain condition, oil consumption, and sunroof drain function. Model years 2010 and 2011 with the 3.6L carry the highest timing chain risk; 2012 and newer are considered safer. Buyers should verify maintenance records, especially oil change history, and should budget for potentially expensive repairs if documentation is lacking. Owners also advise checking for rust on frame rails (particularly for Canadian cars), inspecting the sunroof drains, and confirming any outstanding recalls have been addressed.
The CTS-V (2010-2013) stands apart from the rest of the lineup in owner reports, with the supercharged LSA engine described as "pretty much bulletproof" and the cars "surprisingly well built." Owners of the V note high fuel consumption (around 10 mpg city) and rapid tire wear as the main ownership costs. The 2014 V-Sport has a known rear differential recall and heated seat recall that owners advise checking. The 3.0L engine is less discussed but appears to avoid the worst of the timing chain concerns. Several owners note that the 2011 model year received a fix to the low oil warning system that previously alerted owners only after damage had occurred.
