The version owners recommend

The CTS-V (particularly 2011-2013 models) receives the strongest reliability endorsements, with multiple owners reporting zero major issues at 60,000-85,000 miles and calling the LSA engine "pretty much bulletproof." Among non-V models, 2012-2014 cars with the 3.6L LFX engine are viewed as having resolved the earlier timing chain problems, with one owner stating "the timing chain issues no longer exist on the 2012 and newer with the 3.6 LFX engine." The 3.0L engine is mentioned as a viable alternative for those prioritizing fuel economy over power.

Competitors to consider

Owners compare it most often with the Lexus (unspecified model), Mercedes-Benz (same age), BMW (comparable), Infiniti G37 and Mustang GT.

Overall sentiment

Owners of the 2008-2014 CTS generally describe it as a good, enjoyable car that rewards proper maintenance, with several noting high-mileage examples surpassing 140,000-180,000 miles on regular upkeep. The 3.6L V6 engines, particularly earlier LY7 units, draw the most criticism for timing chain and oil consumption issues, while the CTS-V variants are praised as surprisingly reliable and "bulletproof" when cared for. Later model years (2012+) with the LFX engine are seen as having resolved many early engine concerns, though owners consistently warn that skipping oil changes or running low on oil leads to expensive failures. The car is frequently characterized as better than German rivals on maintenance costs but more demanding than Japanese luxury alternatives.

Positioning vs competitors

Owners position the CTS as cheaper to maintain than comparable BMW or Mercedes models, with one stating "the maintenance on the CTS will be less than anything German, but more than a Japanese lux car." A Lexus was noted as costing double in maintenance in one comparison, though another owner said the CTS is "worse than a Mazda but much better than a Mercedes of the same age." The CTS-V is compared to the Corvette for reliability and to the Mustang GT and Infiniti G37 as alternative performance purchases, with the V's maintenance described as "reasonable, and to par with the Corvette."

Recommended configurations

Owners recommend the 2012-2014 model years with the 3.6L LFX engine over earlier 2008-2011 cars due to the improved timing chain design and oil level detection. For the CTS-V, the 2011-2013 models are specifically praised, with one owner owning both a 2011 wagon and 2013 coupe reporting zero major issues. The manual transmission is explicitly recommended by one owner ("GET THE MANUAL"). RWD is suggested over AWD by one owner to reduce complexity and repair costs, though AWD owners note the CTS4 coupe requires staggered tire sizes which, if ignored, can cause drivetrain damage.

General recommendations

Owners strongly advise buying a 2008-2014 CTS only with documented maintenance history, particularly oil change records, as the 3.6L engines are "known to fail bc bad oil maintenance." Pre-purchase inspections are recommended to identify timing chain wear, fluid leaks, and suspension component condition. Model years 2008-2011 with the LY7 3.6L require extra caution: one owner calls the engine "a gigantic turd" while another says timing chain replacement is needed every 80,000-100,000 miles. Owners recommend checking oil level every other fuel fill-up, changing oil every 5,000-6,000 miles regardless of the oil life monitor, and verifying sunroof drains are clear. For CTS-V models, checking that supercharger and rear differential recalls were addressed is advised.

Remarks

Owners note the 2008-2014 CTS is "a modern classic" and "the last of their kind," with the wagon body style particularly admired. The 3.6L timing chain can be replaced without pulling the engine, which one owner cites as a major plus for DIY maintenance. Several owners report the car is easy to work on with parts available on Amazon and plenty of YouTube guides. The CTS-V's fuel consumption is noted as severe in city driving (around 10 mpg) but acceptable on the highway (20+ mpg), with rear tires lasting only 12,000-15,000 miles. One owner warns that the 2014 V-Sport is "the least desirable V-Sport in the whole line" and difficult to resell.
